Brief History: Kevin built a 1977 Camaro in 1993 for his own drag racing fun but found he to had little time to spend with his young family. Kevin and Shelley decided to offer the car to the BCSSMA for use in their program. Thanks to all the sponsors that help build the race car, it gave about 6-8 High School students the opportunity to race for the next 3 years. In 1997 Unitow Towing donated a 1980 Camaro Z28 to the race team for the purpose of the students to build and race a second car. The students on the Just For Fun Race Team spent the time to install a new race 350 ci motor, a 350 turbo race transmission, stripping interior out of car and doing the complete paint and body work. For the 2000 race year the 1980 Camaro was repainted again by the team students and the motor and transmission was exchanged with 1977 Camaro as this motor had more H.P. The 1980 Camaro was then taken and dynode and has about 350 - 400 H.P to the wheels. Kevin and Shelley arrange for the financing through the support of ongoing sponsorship to go towards the repairs and the transportation of the 1980 Camaro to and from Mission, Ashcroft, and Prince George as well as to and from public events the car and students do. The BCSSMA consists of over 50 Secondary Schools throughout British Columbia. It encourages the promotion of drag racing for High School students in a safe and recognized program. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a recognized Secondary School program, must be 19 year or under, have a valid drivers license, and have completed all consent forms. The High School drag racing program uses only National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) sanctioned race tracks, which meet the criteria for safety by BCSSMA. There are three NHRA race tracks in BC that offers a series of High School Drag races: Mission, Ashcroft and Prince George. For the 2000-year we have participated in many events . We have participated in the Cloverdale Parade, we took second place. We were in the Fort Langley Parade with the Girl guides of Canada (they took second). The 1980 Camaro has done very well with the winning of 12 trophies this year, one of them being the ICBC Provincial Championship in the 2000 yr. In the 2001 year we will have a gas powered Jr. Dragster and will be building a second Jr. Dragster, which will run on alcohol. These two cars will be run by two of our younger team members being of the age of 8 and 13. |
